Barcelona is poised to reclaim its standing as the world capital of technology when the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 opens this Monday at the Fira, running through March 6. Long regarded as the preeminent global celebration of digital innovation, this edition will have one unmistakable protagonist: artificial intelligence. Following two years defined first by the AI explosion and then by the ascent of Generative AI, experts are now turning their attention to agentic AI — a capability that enables machines not merely to execute instructions, but to make autonomous decisions by analyzing context and drawing on prior experience.

Artificial intelligence and its impact on digital innovation will be a pervasive theme throughout MWC 2025, as UOC professor César Córcoles observes. “It will be impossible to visit a single booth without hearing about artificial intelligence,” he notes. Among the most consequential advances on display will be autonomous agents capable of managing complex tasks without direct human intervention. Yet this progress carries with it urgent new questions around privacy and security — particularly as it relates to Neural Processing Units (NPUs). These dedicated on-device processors, designed to run AI locally without constant cloud connectivity, will open a pointed debate about what data remains on the device and what is transmitted to remote servers.

Robotics will command significant attention at the congress, driven by the artificial intelligence now integral to its evolution. While meaningful advances in autonomy and mobility are expected, more accessible consumer models — such as Roomba vacuum cleaners — remain a considerable distance from the futuristic humanoids that drew crowds at the previous edition. Despite price points that can reach €20,000, appetite for these devices continues to grow, and innovation in this sector is poised to be one of the event’s defining attractions.

In the realm of smart home technology, the persistent challenge of integrating devices across competing ecosystems remains a formidable obstacle — though progress is anticipated. Particular interest will center on how Amazon plans to evolve Alexa into a more capable assistant, closing the gap with conversational tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Connected mobility and autonomous vehicles will also command a prominent presence, with brands including Sony and Xiaomi presenting their latest developments. User interface security and comfort will emerge as critical points of debate among industry experts.

The smartphone remains the undisputed centerpiece of MWC 2025, with major launches anticipated from Samsung, Xiaomi, HONOR, OPPO, and Realme. Yet the industry is searching with some urgency for innovations capable of re-engaging a consumer base that is increasingly difficult to impress. From a triple-folding handset to prototypes that shift color with temperature, creativity will be essential currency. Beyond smartphones, smart rings and AI-integrated connected glasses will be on display — though experts are quick to caution that usability, battery life, and comfort remain formidable challenges yet to be resolved.

MWC 2025 promises to be a defining platform for innovation, with artificial intelligence as the thread running through every announcement. As significant advances are unveiled, the broader debate over their integration into daily life — and the challenges they present — will remain conspicuously open. The event will not only illuminate the technologies shaping our immediate future, but invite a deeper reflection on how these innovations are quietly redrawing the boundaries of how we live and work.
