Mexico City is poised to become the epicenter of contemporary art with the opening of Gabriel Orozco‘s “Politécnico Nacional” at the prestigious Museo Jumex — the first solo presentation by the celebrated Mexican artist in the capital in nearly two decades. Curated by Briony Fer, the exhibition promises an immersive experience that invites art lovers to explore the full depth of Orozco’s practice and his enduring pursuit of the boundary between the everyday and the sublime.

“Politécnico Nacional” will present approximately 300 works spanning a broad spectrum of formats, from intimate sculptures to complex installations incorporating photography, drawing, and painting. Rather than a strict retrospective, the organizers have conceived this as an inflection point in Orozco’s career — one that foregrounds his artistic evolution and the continuing resonance of his work within the contemporary art landscape. From his earliest practice, Orozco has transformed ordinary materials into vehicles for questioning function and meaning, an approach that remains as vital today as ever.

The exhibition is open to the public through August 3, 2025, Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours until 7:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission is entirely free, making this one of the most accessible and significant exhibitions of the season. No prior reservation is required.

Born in Xalapa, Veracruz, in 1962, Gabriel Orozco is widely regarded as one of Mexico’s most influential artists and has left an indelible mark on the global contemporary art scene. His work has been exhibited at institutions including the MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Across a career of remarkable range, he has transformed the objects of everyday life into vessels of deep symbolic weight — a practice defined by its critical intelligence and formal precision.

With “Politécnico Nacional,” Museo Jumex reaffirms its commitment to contemporary art while offering audiences a rare opportunity to engage with Orozco’s work in sustained dialogue between past and present. This is not merely a long-awaited homecoming — it is a testament to the enduring vitality of one of contemporary art’s most essential voices.
