Fashion with Memory

Catherine Martin, the celebrated production and costume designer, steps into the world of fashion with a collaboration alongside Miu Miu — a capsule collection that honors the aesthetics of upcycling. When Miuccia Prada proposed the creative union, Martin found herself drawn to the image of the 1920s French Riviera — an era when expatriates like the Fitzgeralds lived a bohemian, between-the-wars idyll. “The idea of a hedonistic life where anything was possible resonated deeply with me,” she reflects.
The Upcycled by Miu Miu project has captured the attention of a younger generation attuned to circular consumption. Martin — known for her work on The Great Gatsby and Elvis — sources recovered fabrics from vintage markets, blending materials such as denim, lace, and cashmere to reimagine iconic garments: a rower’s blazer, jackets with sailor collars. These designs speak not only to conscious fashion but carry a distinct message of freedom and experimentation.

With each piece, Martin seeks to connect the present with a romantic past, crafting a visual narrative that invites the wearer to explore her own stylistic freedom. The collection is as much idea as object — proof that fashion can be both disruptive and conscious, and that glamour need not come at the expense of sustainability.
