Cozumel Port Expansion to Welcome the World’s Largest Cruise Ships

SSA México will invest 882 million pesos in the expansion of the Terminal Internacional de Cruceros Cozumel to simultaneously berth the Icon of the Seas and the Radiance of the Seas — a milestone that signals a new era for cruise tourism in Mexico.

882 million pesos invested in Cozumel port expansion to receive the world's largest cruise ships

In a move set to transform Cozumel’s tourism landscape, SSA México has announced a landmark investment of 882 million pesos for the expansion of the Terminal Internacional de Cruceros. The upgrade will allow the terminal to receive the Icon of the Seas — the world’s largest cruise ship — alongside the Radiance of the Seas simultaneously, considerably increasing the reception capacity of this Caribbean destination.

Cozumel Prepares for a Cruise Tourism Surge with Modern Infrastructure

According to figures released by the company, the expansion will not only accommodate vessels of greater draft but will also provide greater scheduling flexibility and significantly reduce reliance on tenders — the smaller boats used to ferry passengers from ship to pier. Those transfer operations are widely regarded as less safe, particularly for passengers with reduced mobility. The prospect of stepping directly from the Icon of the Seas onto the pier, without complication, speaks to the scale of what this expansion promises.

Cozumel is not merely a celebrated Caribbean destination — it has established itself as Mexico’s most important cruise port, receiving approximately 45 percent of all cruise passengers arriving in the country. In 2024 alone, the terminal welcomed an impressive 4,566,358 passengers, of whom 469,000 disembarked at the Terminal Internacional de Cruceros Cozumel — underscoring its relevance on the global tourism map.

Quintana Roo ports surpass 4 million passengers in 2023

SSA México’s Terminal Internacional de Cruceros, in operation since 1974, has undergone numerous renovations over the decades, continuously adapting to the evolving demands of the maritime industry. Since its founding, the terminal has expanded and modernized to attract the most contemporary vessels, with a pier stretching 460 meters that currently accommodates ships of considerable draft.

In 2024, Cozumel has already received some of the most formidable vessels afloat, among them the Icon of the Seas, capable of carrying up to 7,500 passengers. With the expansion now underway, SSA México is ensuring that Cozumel remains at the vanguard of cruise reception, cementing its position as a premier destination for the world’s largest and most advanced ships.

The figures tell a compelling story. In the 2024 rankings of cruise ships calling at Cozumel, the Mariner of the Seas leads with 643,952 passengers, followed closely by the M/S Harmony of the Seas with 516,662 visitors. The arrival of these massive vessels underscores the urgency of the terminal’s expansion. Partnerships with major cruise lines are already in place — Royal Caribbean alone accounts for approximately 90 percent of all arrivals.

The terminal’s modernized infrastructure, combined with a sharper focus on safety and accessibility, promises to elevate the visitor experience and establish Cozumel at an entirely new level within global cruise tourism.

With this strategic investment, SSA México is positioning Cozumel at the heart of the Caribbean — and redefining what the region’s cruise industry can aspire to. The expansion of the Terminal Internacional de Cruceros Cozumel is, without question, a step toward a more ambitious future — one in which every cruise ship that calls enriches both the traveler’s experience and the local economic ecosystem.
