E-Commerce and AI: The Keys to SME Success

Today, entering the e-commerce space has become an indispensable requirement for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking to expand their sales and reach new markets. Yet despite its growing importance, a significant technology adoption gap persists across the sector. According to recent data from the Asociación de Emprendedores de México (Asem), five in ten businesses still conduct no online sales, citing inadequate staff training, limited awareness of available tools, and the belief that digital commerce is simply unnecessary.

Despite these barriers, the impact on SMEs that have chosen to digitize their operations is striking. Rodrigo Pérez, marketing director at GoDaddy, notes that 88% of businesses acknowledge that digitization has produced a more efficient working environment — translating directly into resource optimization and increased revenue. The figure underscores the transformative potential e-commerce holds for SME management.

Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an equally pivotal role in this landscape. SMEs that have implemented AI solutions have achieved meaningful efficiencies, freeing up as many as nine hours of work per week — approximately 36 hours per month. “If we multiply nine hours a week by everything we have across the year, we are effectively saving an entire month of work,” says Pérez, underscoring the day-to-day impact these tools are already delivering.

More revealing still: 67% of SMEs in Mexico intend to expand their market reach and acquire new customers through digital tools, according to a GoDaddy report. Among available technologies, artificial intelligence commands the highest expectations. A full 76% of businesses believe AI will enable them to sharpen their competitive edge within the next 12 months — a finding that reinforces the urgency of adoption.

Artificial Intelligence: A Strategic Engine for SME Growth

The Asem survey reveals that 49% of businesses surveyed are already deploying AI, with the highest concentration of implementations in marketing, graphic design, and advertising. The data makes clear that SMEs are beginning to recognize these tools as essential for optimizing their processes and securing greater visibility in an increasingly competitive digital marketplace.

Yet a lack of clarity around how to build an effective digital presence remains a persistent obstacle. To address this gap, Rodrigo Pérez argues that artificial intelligence represents a strategic solution for accelerating digitization among SMEs — a view shared by the 76% of businesses that believe AI can provide the support needed to overcome these challenges.

In direct response to this demand, GoDaddy has launched Airo, a platform that consolidates all AI capabilities into a single interface. The tool includes, among other features, a free application for domain name suggestions, logo editing, and website creation — giving SMEs a more efficient path to establishing a credible digital presence.

For small and medium-sized enterprises in Mexico, embracing e-commerce and adopting technologies such as AI is no longer merely an opportunity — it is a competitive imperative. Overcoming resistance to digitization and leveraging these tools may well determine the difference between growth and stagnation in today’s market. The moment for SMEs to claim their place in the digital revolution is now.
