Valencia’s Literary Fair Marks Six Decades as a Cultural Landmark

From April 24 to May 4, the Jardines de Viveros will be transformed into the epicenter of literary culture, hosting the sixtieth edition of the Fira del Llibre de València — an event that not only marks sixty years of existence, but represents a significant return to normalcy following the devastation wrought by the DANA floods the previous year.

The Fira del Llibre de València, with its sixty-year history, has secured its standing as one of Spain’s most important literary fairs. Under the direction of Manolo Gil — who has announced this will be his final edition — the event continues to adapt to changing times and cultivate a genuine appetite for reading, particularly among younger generations, whose leisure time devoted to books has increased markedly. For Gil, this is clear evidence that the Fira has succeeded in reinventing itself across generations. The event carries particular weight this year as the first major gathering of the literary community since the natural disaster that struck Valencia. The fair presents itself as an opportunity to heal and restore the region’s cultural fabric.

With a secured budget of €130,000 through the combined efforts of the Generalitat and the Ajuntament, the Fira offers a robust program encompassing 91 exhibitors and 135 stalls. The majority of bookshops affected by the DANA will receive complimentary space — a gesture that speaks to the solidarity running through Valencia’s literary and cultural community. Programming spans a wide range of activities, from new book presentations to children’s workshops and musical performances. Also notable are the exhibitions by the Associació de Professionals de la Il·lustració Valenciana, presenting works that champion cooperation and solidarity in times of crisis.

A Tribute to Literature and Its Protagonists

A visit to the fair will offer the opportunity to encounter celebrated writers including Fernando Aramburu and Santiago Posteguillo. The appearance of Theodor Kallifatides, the Swedish author of Greek origin, will stand as one of the edition’s defining moments — secured through considerable effort to bring the 87-year-old writer to Valencia. Among the fair’s tributes, particular attention is paid to writer Maria Beneyto, a foundational figure in Valencian literature, and to the late Ramón Guillem, whose mark on local culture remains indelible.

The sixtieth Fira del Llibre de València is more than a literary event — it is a cultural rebirth, an invitation to reflection and dialogue that reaffirms the enduring place of reading and literature in our lives. The Jardines de Viveros will fill once more with the vibrant spirit of creativity and solidarity, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, the passion for books and culture remains as vital as ever.
