The circular economy is gaining meaningful momentum in Mexico, driven by a Guadalajara-based startup called Solo Réntalo. Founded in 2024, this platform promotes a peer-to-peer rental model designed not only to curb unnecessary consumption, but to give users a tangible path to supplemental income.

With a catalog that now exceeds 180 available items, the platform has attracted more than 300 users in its first year of operation. Founder Carlos Luna Valdovinos traces the idea to a personal observation — how many objects in his own home sat unused for months at a time. “The impulse to share those objects, generate extra income, and let others benefit from them is what drove me to build this platform,” he explains.

The stakes are significant: 80 percent of household items in Mexican homes are used less than once a month. Solo Réntalo not only facilitates access to tools and event equipment — it promotes a fundamental shift in how consumers think about ownership itself.

“Building an inclusive marketplace has been essential to connecting people who have items they no longer use with those who need them. Every transaction becomes a contribution to sustainability,” Luna adds. By 2025, the startup plans to expand into Mexico’s major cities — including Mexico City and Monterrey — cementing logistics partnerships that will allow it to scale without compromising security.

Still measuring the full extent of its environmental footprint, Solo Réntalo represents one of the more compelling propositions in Mexico’s responsible consumption landscape. Its model invites consumers to rethink entrenched habits — and points toward a more sustainable future for the country.
