Overture: The Jet That Wants to Bring Back the Supersonic Age

Boom Supersonic, the American company determined to reintroduce commercial supersonic flight, is advancing with purpose toward the launch of its Overture aircraft. The first model is expected to be ready in 2025, with an inaugural flight projected for 2029.

Designed to be as efficient as it is elegant, the Overture will seat between 64 and 80 passengers and reach speeds of up to 2,100 km/h. Equipped with four next-generation engines and wings sculpted to optimize performance at high velocity, the aircraft aims not only to cut flight times in half, but to do so with a standard of energy efficiency unprecedented in commercial aviation.

One of its most significant differentiators is its environmental commitment. Unlike its predecessors, the Overture is designed to operate exclusively on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) — a deliberate commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of air travel. The aircraft will also be constructed from carbon composites that are not only lighter than aluminum, but more resilient and aerodynamically refined.

On the experience front, Boom has announced that its noise-reduction system will enable a markedly quieter takeoff, eliminating the need for afterburners. In the words of founder Blake Scholl:

“Overture is revolutionary in its design — it is changing the way we understand distance.”

The project’s ambitions extend well beyond commercial aviation. Boom has forged a partnership with Northrop Grumman to develop Overture variants with government and defense applications. Its new production facility in North Carolina, alongside its development installation in Colorado, confirms that the infrastructure for this new chapter in aviation is already taking shape.

With more than 70 units on order from carriers including United and Japan Airlines, the Overture promises to fundamentally alter the way the world moves. Faster, more sustainable, and defined by an aesthetic that sets an entirely new standard in the skies — the future of supersonic flight is already under construction.
