An evening of music becomes something far greater when the composer steps forward as guide, narrator, and soul of the occasion. Such is the promise of the concert Juan Pablo Contreras — one of the most celebrated Mexican composers of his generation — will lead at the head of the Orquesta Latino Mexicana in a gala that transcends the purely auditory to become an emotional and cultural immersion into the essence of Mexico.

Born in Guadalajara and trained in the United States, Contreras has spent his career constructing a sonic bridge between two worlds. In this concert, he will not only present some of his most celebrated works — he will do so as conductor and narrator, offering audiences an immersive and illuminating experience. From the stage, he will explain the origin, intention, and context of each piece, accompanied by musical fragments that prepare the ground for its full interpretation. It is an innovative format that brings classical music within reach of every kind of listener, without sacrificing depth or artistic rigor.

The program promises to be a mosaic of identity. It opens with Mariachitlán, his Latin GRAMMY®-nominated work acclaimed as “the new Huapango,” fusing the energy of mariachi with symphonic structure. It continues with the national premieres of La Silla, MeChicano, and Alma Monarca — compositions that explore the symbolic geography of Jalisco and the cultural resilience of Mexican communities abroad. Each work is an act of reclamation and pride, woven from traditional motifs and contemporary technique.

The finale will be majestic: a full performance of his Symphony No. 1 “My Great Dream” — a monumental work that contemplates his trajectory, his heritage, and his place between two cultures. A tribute to grand dreams, deep roots, and the transformative power of art.

This is not merely a symphonic evening. It is an invitation to hear Mexico with new ears — to experience music as narrative, as memory, as possibility.

The event takes place on August 16 at the Conjunto Santander de Artes Escénicas.
