The recent cryptocurrency scandal has shaken Argentina’s political and financial landscape. Despite the solid domestic standing Javier Milei continues to enjoy — with an approval rating of approximately 55% — the president now faces a significant challenge that threatens his international standing. Mauricio Claver-Carone, advisor to Donald Trump and former president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), has announced that the United States will open a formal investigation into the matter, placing Milei squarely in the global spotlight.

During a recent interview on CNN, Claver-Carone delivered a pointed critique of Milei’s leadership, suggesting that the president has implemented policies disturbingly similar to the Peronism he so vocally condemned. “Milei is governing with a circle that represents the very worst of Argentina’s political caste,” he stated. The central concern is that, despite Milei’s impassioned defenses of economic liberalism on the world stage, his administration has failed to demonstrate coherence at home. The creation of a cryptocurrency that has defrauded hundreds of American investors may prove to be the defining fracture in that narrative.

Claver-Carone not only announced the judicial investigation the United States intends to pursue, but underscored the reputational damage the episode has already inflicted on Milei and his inner circle. “It is a valuable lesson for President Milei on the importance of surrounding himself with better-advised counsel and avoiding entirely preventable mistakes,” he declared. The fallout from this episode could impose significant additional pressures on his administration and its decision-making capacity going forward.

In response to the scandal, Javier Milei has established the Investigation Task Force (UTI), led by the Ministry of Justice, with a mandate to pursue answers regarding the cryptocurrency affair. While the FBI is reportedly already conducting its own inquiries, Argentina’s Anti-Corruption Office will focus its examination on potential violations of the Public Ethics Act by Milei or members of his administration.

The future of Javier Milei’s government hangs in a delicate balance. While his domestic support appears to hold firm, the investigations now underway carry the potential to inflict lasting damage on his international image. The next phase of the case — and the ultimate findings of the United States inquiry — will prove consequential not only for the future of his administration, but for the world’s perception of the Argentine economy as a whole. Will Milei navigate these turbulent waters with his credibility intact, or will this prove to be the first of many challenges destined to unsettle his presidency?
