Celebrity Tequila Grows Up

When George Clooney and Rande Gerber sold Casamigos to Diageo for one billion dollars, they opened an entirely new business category: tequila with a celebrity on the label. Today, fifteen brands are in circulation — Hollywood faces, NBA royalty, musicians, and supermodels among them.

Three have pulled ahead of the field. Teremana, backed by Dwayne Johnson, grew faster than any celebrity spirit before it and has firmly established itself in everyday consumption. Cincoro, co-founded by Michael Jordan and fellow NBA owners, is pressing the ultra-premium tier with aged expressions. And Casamigos, the original, continues to define the category from within the Diageo portfolio.

818, from model Kendall Jenner, has cemented itself as one of the defining brands of its generation. Lobos 1707, backed by LeBron James, targets high-end on-premise accounts. Pantalones Organic, from Matthew and Camila McConaughey, adds an organic credential to the celebrity portfolio. And Código 1530, championed by George Strait, insists on traditional production over media spectacle.

The weight of a celebrated name — the exclusivity and prestige that travel from artist to glass — transforms these bottles into something that transcends ordinary consumption. Tequila, it turns out, was always destined to cross every border.
