The explosive, fiercely competitive Alcaraz leads tennis into a new era.

There are places that acquire relevance only because a hero happened to be born there. Fernando Valenzuela made Etchohuaquila, Sonora, famous. Carlos Hermosillo put Cerro Azul, Veracruz, on the map. And Carlos Alcaraz has done the same for El Palmar, a small locality five kilometers from Murcia, in Spain.

Its population barely reaches 25,000, yet every one of its residents is proudly represented by a tennis player who, alongside Italian rival Jannik Sinner, holds the world No. 1 ranking in the Association of Tennis Professionals standings.

Their encounters have bordered on the epic.
