The Unsettling Creative Maturity of Andrés Mérida

His works — unmistakably his own — have traveled the world, from China to the United States, from France to Mexico, and always forward. A genuinely passionate artist with a gift for wit, born in Algeciras, Cádiz, in 1964, and Andalusian to his core.
His signature lies in a complex, labyrinthine, and intensely charged line — one that generates spectacular compositions that are instantly and unmistakably recognizable.

His distorted, fiercely individual figures have circled the globe, while his work and exhibitions have evolved without pause — drawing on the great artistic movements of the 20th century, above all Expressionism and Surrealism, to construct a universe that is entirely his own, and more recently fusing that foundation with digital media and contemporary culture.
He experiments with live performance, painting in real time and collaborating with other artists — most notably creating sets and costume elements for Sara Baras.
It’s Mérida. It’s magic.
