L’ÉCOLE des Arts Joailliers revisits, in “Paris, City of Pearls,” the fascinating pearl trade that bound Paris to the Persian Gulf across the 19th and 20th centuries. Open through June 2025, the exhibition reveals how these marine gems became enduring symbols of luxury and creative ambition in the French capital.

Backed by Van Cleef & Arpels, the exhibition traces more than a century of history across six immersive sections. From pieces by Cartier and Fred to treasures drawn from the Petit Palais, each work illuminates Paris’s obsession with pearls during the 1920s — the decade in which they reached their peak artistic and social currency.

The exhibition reaches well beyond jewelry: it weaves together art, science, and history to explore how these biomineral spheres shaped French cultural life. “We seek to awaken curiosity about the jeweler’s savoir-faire,” the organizers explain — tracing everything from gemological processes to the pearl’s influence on Modernist design.

Among the highlights are pieces from private collections such as Albion Art and leading Parisian institutions, together composing a narrative about the social power of pearls. They were never mere adornments — they represented authority, innovation, and global connection at a moment of extraordinary creative splendor.

Paris, City of Pearls” invites visitors to rediscover a forgotten chapter in the history of luxury. More than an exhibition, it is an immersion into the very heart of Parisian elegance — where every pearl holds secrets of art, commerce, and cultural legacy. A singular opportunity to connect with the luster of history.
