Drumlanrig Castle, Scotland: A New Luxury Accommodation

Drumlanrig Castle Reinvents Itself as a Luxury Destination
The majestic Drumlanrig Castle, set within the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland, has announced the completion of renovations at Montagu Cottage — a holiday rental property on the Queensberry Estate. This handsome country house is now available to those seeking an exclusive retreat at the heart of the Scottish countryside.
Situated beside Laundry Cottage — another well-regarded rental property on the estate — Montagu Cottage sits within easy reach of Drumlanrig Castle itself. Built in the early-to-mid nineteenth century, both cottages served originally as the estate laundry before being remodeled in 1871 and subsequently converted into two independent residences in 1924. Retaining their Category B listed status, the properties are an integral part of the estate’s history, combining architectural heritage with thoroughly contemporary comforts.
Montagu Cottage accommodates six guests across three bedrooms — including one room configured as either a king or twin, and two double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Guests may unwind in the open-plan living and kitchen area, warmed by a double-sided wood-burning stove. The generous family bathroom features a walk-in shower and a freestanding bath. A private garden with terrace looks out over the Nith Valley, where sheep and lambs graze just beyond the fence. The cottage is positioned directly beside the estate’s trail network, making it an ideal base for walkers, cyclists, and those drawn to the natural world.
Up to two dogs are welcome, rendering it a natural choice for those who prefer to travel with their animals. For larger parties, Montagu Cottage may be reserved in conjunction with the adjoining Laundry Cottage — which also sleeps six and features a large outdoor hot tub.
Montagu Cottage joins a collection that already encompasses three holiday apartments and five estate cottages. Queensberry Cottage was added to the portfolio in 2024. A ten-minute drive from Drumlanrig Castle, Dabton House opened in 2023 following a complete renovation, offering exclusive-use accommodation for groups of up to twenty-four guests across eleven en-suite bedrooms and several reception rooms designed for dining and relaxation.
From March through October, guests staying in any of the estate’s holiday properties enjoy exclusive privileges, including complimentary access to the castle gardens and adventure playground. A curated range of additional experiences is available — among them guided castle tours, electric bicycle hire, loch and river fishing, simulated game shooting, and Scottish obstacle courses. The estate also hosts a calendar of events throughout the year.
Set against the natural beauty of Scotland and the deep historical resonance of Drumlanrig Castle, Montagu Cottage emerges as the ideal destination for those who wish to experience luxury within an authentically historic setting. From its architecture to its service, every detail has been considered to ensure a stay that is as memorable as the landscape that surrounds it — a privileged corner of Scotland, made accessible without ever being diminished.
