The explosive, mercurial Alcaraz is leading tennis into a new era.

There are places that earn their place on the map the day a hero is born within them. Fernando Valenzuela put Etchohuaquila, Sonora, on the world’s radar. Carlos Hermosillo did the same for Cerro Azul, Veracruz. And Carlos Alcaraz has done it for El Palmar — a small municipality five kilometers outside of Murcia, in Spain.

Its population barely reaches 25,000, yet every one of its residents is proudly represented by a tennis player who, alongside Italian rival Jannik Sinner, holds the world No. 1 ranking on the ATP Tour.

Their encounters have been nothing short of epic.
